![]() The tannic finish is good, long, and food friendly, especially for malbec’s natural pairing, beef! If you happen to need a red daily drinker for dinner, and eat a lot of heavy winter dishes, Kirkland Signature Malbec is a great choice. While it doesn’t have a huge amount of depth, it has a seriously solid malbec flavor, and is delightful in general. Kirkland Signature Malbec is rather impressive for only $7. Savor: The ending is a rather tannic with a creamy sort of texture, it moves toward dark chocolate and plum skin. It’s worth noting, that despite the fruit, it’s bone dry. ![]() Hints of chocolate and herbs around the edges. There’s a good smoke backbone behind lots of plum and blackberries. Sip: A smooth start with a bit of bitterness and tannin rounds out into a bright, lively fruit forward moderate body. At just 4.99 a bottle, this Kirkland Pinot Grigio is the biggest steal on the list. There’s lots of nice smokey notes, which are complimented by hints of spice box, mocha, and espresso. Smell: Deeply fruity with lots of plum and blackberry. 2019 Kirkland Signature Malbec 14 alcohol 6.99 Owen: Sourced from Mendoza, Argentina, the 2019 Malbec shows milk chocolate and tobacco leaf tones with blackberry compote on the nose. Sight: Medium purple with a hint of brickish color, touches of orange around the edge. Does Kirkland Signature Malbec 2013 make a great Malbec, or should you look else where for an example? Malbec has enjoyed a resurgence thanks to the great values it presents from Argentina. Notable Regions: Argentina, Cahors (France) General Characteristics: Plum, Vanilla, Cherry, Chocolate While this is the Malbec most people are aware of, Cahors in France also is well known for Malbec, making a brooding, tannic example that’s more rustic and rough, but delicious in it’s own right. Unlike Bordeaux, the Malbec is more sheltered from frost, and makes low acidity, soft wines with plenty of dark fruit, mocha, and earthy characteristics. If you’ve missed the first few wines, you can read all about Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Franc, but today’s wine, is the red hot Malbec!Īlthough historically from France (and named cot), Malbec has thrived in Argentina since it’s introduction in the nineteenth century. Most people enter the REM stage of sleep after 90 minutes and remain there for most of the second half of the night. While your brain activity is heightened at this stage, your muscles are in a state of paralysis, with two significant exceptions - the muscles that control breathing and your eyes (hence the name). This is when most people experience vivid dreams and strengthen both memory and creativity. The REM (or rapid eye movement) stage of sleep is when your brain is most active. REM sleep is the last stage of the sleep cycle and the one most people are familiar with. For many people, the first half of the night is spent in the deep sleep stage. It’s during this stage that your body experiences recovery and growth. During stage 3, your muscles relax even more and your breathing and heart rate slow. As the name suggests, it’s more difficult to wake someone once they enter this stage of the sleep cycle. Stage 3 sleep is also referred to as deep sleep. Short bursts of brain activity make you less susceptible to being woken by external factors during this stage in the sleep cycle. Your muscles begin to relax, your heart and breathing rates slow down, and your body temperature lowers. Stage 2 of NREM sleep lasts between 10 and 30 minutes and happens as your body enters a more subdued state. Without disruption, most people move quickly from stage 1 to stage 2. Because you’re not fully asleep, it’s quite easy to wake during the stage 1 NREM cycle. During this stage, your body is just starting to relax and brain activity is slowing down. Stage 1 generally lasts for between 1 and 5 minutes and is described as the time it takes you to “doze off”. The higher the stage of NREM sleep you’re in, the harder it is to wake up. NREM stands for “non-REM” sleep and most people experience 3 of these cycles per night, ranging in duration from 5 minutes up to 60 minutes. Your natural sleep cycle consists of four stages including 3 NREM cycles and one REM cycle. Natural Sleep CyclesĪs you progress through the different stages of sleep, you’re more likely to wake during some than others. During this time, a number of factors (both physical and mental) can cause you to wake up and make it impossible to fall back to sleep. Unfortunately, some people still struggle to sleep for one, long period of time. With the invention of electricity, people naturally extended their wake hours much later into the night and consolidated sleep into one long stretch (or bout). Because of this, there’s a disconnect between darkness and how much sleep people need. ![]() This meant they were sleeping for between 12 and 15 hours a night! That’s nearly 6 hours longer than the 7 to 9 hours recommended for adults. Before electricity, people would fall asleep after sunset and stay asleep until sunrise. In the 17th century, historian Roger Ekirch explained that people sleep in two bouts and experience a period of wakefulness in the middle of the night. One doctor, however, credits historical evidence as an explanation for why we naturally wake up during the night. Fossey destroyed traps and was even known to detain poachers, sometimes physically beating them. After poachers brutally killed her favorite gorilla, Digit, in 1977, Fossey launched a public and somewhat obsessive crusade to protect gorillas and punish poachers. Park rangers were known to accept bribes, allowing poachers to set up traps and routinely kill gorillas in the national park where Fossey worked. Her travels brought her into contact with the archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey and wildlife photographers Alan and Joan Root and introduced her to the work of primatologist Jane Goodall. In 1963, she borrowed money in order to finance an extended trip to Africa. She would later credit her work with children for helping her earn the trust of the mountain gorillas she studied. Rowlands also explains that the drink may have been originally invented as a way to mask unpalatable or harsh-tasting scotch that was common in the 18th century. I didn’t know it at the time, but the name “hot toddy” may come from Edinburgh itself! As Barbara Rowlands writes for the Telegraph, “The word probably comes from Tod’s well, a spring located on Arthur’s seat, the hill in the heart of Edinburgh, which was one of the city’s early water supplies.” 1 (There are other explanations for the origins of the term hot toddy, including an Indian drink called a toddy and an Irish physician named Robert Bently Todd who is credited for popularizing a similar hot alcohol drink.) In its simplest form, a hot toddy is a hot beverage made with water, honey, lemon, and whisky (or other spirits like brandy or vodka). It can also open the sinuses to bring relief to stubborn congestion. The heat of the brew as well as the warming qualities of the alcohol can bring profound relief when you are feeling tense and achy. I can’t remember when I had my first hot toddy, but I can say it was love at first sip. He rang up a bottle for me and wished me well, “May that serve ye well, a toddy is the best of cures.” Ye aren’t the first to come askin’ for hot toddy whiskey this morn, looks like a summer cold is making the rounds.” He nodded knowingly and replied, “Aye, no single malt for ye, ‘twould be a waste. Then there is Thorn, his life was so tragic and yet he was so good. His character growth was so amazing and one of the best I have ever seen. Fearless had a very strong moral compass, desire, and a motivation and idea he wanted to achieve. I also liked how Prance got to do more then just complain about the Us leaving her. I really like how things are turning out between Chase and Shadow, and its great. We got to see several characters from the first arc, and Chase and Shadow had many moments. What I liked: I really liked how Chase matured a lot compared to book one. So now is the big question: What went wrong and what went right? And in another way, certain thing did happen that I really wanted to happen. In a way, certain aspects just didn't lead up to my expectations. Divided there will be no hope of saving Bravelands, but together they might stand a chance.
